October programs @ the Library

Check out the programs we have planned for October.  There is sure to be something for everyone!  Pre-registration is required for all programs and events.

Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6:30pm
Sandhill Crane's Wine Tasting, Free
Heather Price will provide information on the wine-making process as well as great wines to taste.  You must be at least 21 years old to participate.

Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 1:00pm
Genie's Book Club, Free
Join your friends and neighbors for a lively, informal adult book discussion.  Pick up a copy of the book at the library.  October's choice is the Great Michigan Read 2013 title: Annie's Ghosts by Steve Luxenberg.

Thursday, Oct. 3 at 11:00am
Lunch & Learn: Greeting Cards using pressed leaves, $8.00
Bring your lunch and learn something new.  The library provides the beverages.  In this class you will make two greeting cards using pressed leaves and beautiful paint.  All materials will be provided.

Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6:30pm
Make Magic In Your Kitchen, $5.00
Renee Chodkowski, the Great Foodini, will enlighten us with ideas for cooking tasty recipes.  Renee will provide everyone with samples.

Saturday, Oct. 12 at 9:00am to 4:00pm
5th Annual Hamburg Community Fine Art & Craft Show, Free
Visitors will see art such as pottery, pen & ink, wood carvings, sculptures, photography, textiles, jewelry, glass, and paintings in watercolor, oils, acrylics, and pastels.  Lunch will be available from Holy Spirit Catholic Church and School.

Make Your Own Great Sausage, Free
Gary Radke, owner of Howell's Great Lakes Meats, will demonstrate the art of making sausage.  Sausages, equipment, and seasonings will be available for purchase.

A Nefariously Nightmarish Halloween Party, Free
Come to the library's annual Halloween party for hay rides (weather permitting), the haunted library, snacks, games, and fun.  Costumes are welcome!

Fall Charter Bus Trip to the Vineyards, $36.00
Join fellow library patrons and friends for a fall excursion to Sandhill Crane Vineyards in Jackson.  The trip includes lunch, tour, and a sampling of six wines.

Bugle Calls in the Civil War Camps

Wednesday, Sept. 11 @ 6:30pm

Dressed in costume, Dave Pettigrove will demonstrate bugle calls which alerted soldiers to routine activities throughout their day. Program will be held outdoors, weather permitting. Registration required, free.


 

Michigan Railroad Depots

Thursday, Sept. 12 @ 6:30pm

Michael H. Hodges, Detroit News writer and author of 'Michigan's Historic Railroad Stations,' photographed and profiled 31 depots across the state. This slide show presentation will highlight the historical style and news accounts of the train era. Books will be available for purchase. Registration required, free.

As Seen On TV...

Our latest book display features books and movies ... "as seen on TV."  Check out Johnny Carson, Martha Stewart, Saturday Night Live, Andy Rooney, Aaron Spelling, Jack Benny, James Garner, the Supernanny, Bob Vila, and many DVDs of classic television shows (as well as the new ones!).

The display is just inside the main entrance and features an ever-changing theme.  Check it out the next time you're in.  Whether you're looking to discover a new interest or rediscover an old one, we have just the item for you.

Library Calendar of Upcoming Events

Be sure to explore the "Upcoming Events" calendar on the right side of the home screen (just below the library's hours).  Hover your cursor over any yellow date to view the event or news item and related details.  Many events will require pre-registration which you can do via phone (810.231.1771), email (hamb@tln.lib.mi.us), or in person at the front service desk.

E-books Just Got a Little Easier

With the library's new catalog system, logging in to use the free e-book service is a little easier.  Now, to log in, you no longer have to precede your library card number with 'hamb.'  Just enter your library card number as it appears on your library card.

To access the library's free e-book service:

     OR
2) Click on the e-materials link found under the 'materials' tab near the top of the library's website (www.hamburglibrary.org).

Manage Your Account

The new catalog system allows you to manage your account to suit your needs.  Log on to the system by entering your library card number on the box on the left side of the screen.  For your first time using the system, use "userpass" as your password.  The system will prompt you to change your password to something unique.  You can then, under the "My Account" tab, change your settings, keep track of check outs, fines, reserves, make renewals, etc.

ExpressSOS CONNECT!

The Hamburg Twp. Library is now an ExpressSOS CONNECT library.  Through our partnership with the Michigan Secretary of State's office, we are an online access point for all Hamburg Township residents.  Their online, no-wait program provides access to computerized transactions that take just minutes, saving you time and money.  Just look for the ExpressSOS button on the library's website (www.hamburglibrary.org) to connect you with the Secretary of State.

New Catalog Coming...

The library is pleased to announce we will begin using Verso catalog software July 9th.  Library patrons will notice a new look and many more features that will enhance their experience at the library.  Look for instructional handouts at the front desk in the near future.
